Writing books for kids: taking risks to be published

In an editorial a few years ago, I described a tree house in the garden a local restaurant. I wrote: "The whole structure has been rebuilt from recycled wood, much of which still bears the paint, logos or posters on the walls original from whence it came. The generous platform is surrounded by a solid fence, which includes the branches of the tree itself, random two by four wood panels, and even a pair of elk antlers. The "house" is more of a shed big enough for children (but not adults) to stand inside, with a door and two detection detection windows so passengers can spy on the diners below or out in the parking lot adjacent. A green padded bench that had belonged a dinner offers enough space. In the tree house hangs a swing, from which children can pull on a thick layer of hay on the lawn. "

Quick Send this summer. The restaurant renewed their backyard, including the tree house. The railing now consists of uniform boards about three inches. The house is not reached by a ladder and a trap but a ladder in good faith. The door is gone, the windows are covered with glass, and various branches of the tree have been reduced to discourage climbing. But the worst part, according to my 10 years is that the swing has disappeared. Mateo said that the whole structure "boring." In today's world, children have much less freedom than previous generations. Their lives are more controlled, sometimes due to parental fears of an increasingly dangerous society, but often because we have somehow come to believe that to become successful adults, children's activities must be channeled, scheduled and programmed from early childhood.

The danger comes in many forms, a stranger met on the road to school (which may be a neighbor walking his dog, but you never know), leisure time is not full of "enrichment" activities. But, in my opinion, children need a little danger in their lives. They must test their limits, learn to climb a ladder and squeeze through a trapdoor. They have to rush into a pile of hay and learn it's best not to land in the face. If adults need to clean your world too, children never learn to excel. They never seek the satisfaction of things that are a little scared, a little off the radar of their parents, and to achieve something that belongs only them.

One of the few places kids can still push their limits are the books. You may leave your life safely with a history, or test new ideas about the size. But adults are likely to want to clean the choices their children to read together. I know that parents People always hate Barbara Park Junie B. Jones chapter books because the mind Junie is not a good model, or will not read Winnie the Pooh Christopher Robin, because he can not explain it very well. I also know that many writers who dare to write books that are a bit subversive because publishers are not afraid of its publication. But for every parent who insists that "safe" reading for their children (and this is the right of every parent to do so), there are at least two parents who believe it is good for children to get into the danger zone through fiction. I do not defend murder mysteries preschoolers here, only the books that could be considered a little wild, or more fun to education. Leave some popular examples:

When I saw Walter, the Farting Dog by William Kozwinkle Glenn Murray and illustrated by Audrey Colman (a picture book that the plot needs no explanation) he feared that the publication of children that we are falling a bit too low. But when he began winning awards and spawning suites, changed my mind. Let's face it farting makes kids laugh. And if your child finds this book you should be happy hysterical. To get the joke, kids need noisy bodily functions are considered rude. Laugh at their theme is one of the benefits of childhood. Do not worry, it will take.

A picture book coming out of what is already December creating a buzz is 17 Things I'm not allowed to do more for Jenny Offill, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter. Heroin pronounce phrases like "I had a basic idea the hair of my brother at his side. I am not allowed to use the stapler more. "It also bunny slippers tails of his brother in the ground, and shows Joey Whipple her underwear. The n of two large. This ingenious story should satisfy both camps of parents who want children to understand the consequences of inappropriate behavior, and those who not afraid to let their children to live through a curious, mischievous. A pop-up book later this month from three publishing opportunities Maurice Sendak, Arthur Yorinks and Matthew Reinhart lets young children face the monsters hiding in their closets and come out on top. In Mama? A young man walks into a house Research haunted by his mother and encounters creatures like a goblin, a mummy, and Frankenstein. Instead of running scared, the boy pulls pranks on each monster, Deflation their power and showing how humor conquers fear every time.

Speaking of fear, if you have not read the whole series very popular medium of Unfortunate Events Lemony Snicket novels degree, do it. With titles like The Bad Beginning, The Miserable Mill, and the danger and put penultimate warns the author, such as: "If you are interested in stories with happy endings, it is best to read another book, "are actually stories where adults dare not tread. But the children are sufficiently brave enough to venture between the covers is full of hilarious plots exciting challenges. The intelligent Baudelaire orphans have unusual skills (Violet by inventing, Klaus for reading and research, and baby Sunny for biting) that make them admirable heroes.

Lauren Myracle enters the private world of his novels on teenage and young adult TTFN TTYL. Titles alone might raise suspicions of some parents because if they are well versed in IM (messaging snapshot), they will not know what the abbreviations represent. In fact, the entire novels consist of conversations between three high school girls writing in emails, text messages and instant messaging, with direct access to standard equipment that includes abbreviated strange spelling and syntax. If you Immer is not yourself, you will find books a little hard to read. But you and I are not the target here. And if the format might keep adults examination of the books too closely, upper plots are standard fare adult relationships, family trauma and peer pressure, even drugs and Alcohol is a credible way that reflects a growth of character at the end of each story.

As an author, if you are inspired Dive into the little dangerous, dark or subversive corners of childhood with your books, please do so. Do not limit yourself to all that is clear, and consistent with the code. Allow children to where they can get away from the eyes of parental care and have an adventure. If adventure in a book, always return home safely. And if you're not convinced, consider this: In the patio of the restaurant, the tree house is now empty. But the books I've described above are flying off the shelves.
